Trainee teachers in their first years working on the job are being offered new support from an expert panel that will draft guidance to help them.

The aim is to deliver, for the first time, a way of giving additional support and advice during a new teacher’s first years in their career.

A group of experts will now review the content of teacher training programmes and recommend ways in which these can be aligned with the Early Career Framework.

The government says this is the biggest teaching reform that has been ‘unveiled in a generation’.

The guidance will underpin the programme of training for new teachers and will start with updated content for their training and then once qualified, leading them into the Early Career Framework.

The panel of experts will be led by Prof Sam Twiselton OBE who is a director of the Sheffield Institute of Education.

Nick Gibb, the minister for school standards, said: “The Early Career Framework is the shift in the available support for trainee teachers who are starting out in their careers to ensure newly qualified teachers continue being mentored and to help them develop the key skills that teachers need.

“The advisory group will play an essential role to help ensure the training the teachers receive is of the highest quality and consistent as the programme is rolled out.”

Prof Twiselton has lots of experience in developing curriculum content for trainee teachers and she will be supported by six education leaders.

She explained: “The best performing countries share a focus on developing teachers and this will be at the heart of what we are looking to achieve.

“We will bring the early career framework and initial teacher training into close alignment to provide an opportunity to ensure that all newly qualified teachers will have access to a shared understanding of how to develop their careers.”

Trainee teachers receiving a two-year package of support

The new scheme will see new trainee teachers receiving a two-year package of support and training at the beginning of their career, including a reduced timetable to enable them to make the most of this opportunity.

The government is also pledging extra investment through the Teacher Development Premium worth £42 million to help roll-out the Early Career Framework.

The final recommendations for the project will be unveiled by the end of the summer and its publication will coincide with the national roll-out of Ofsted’s new inspection framework and the Early Career Framework.
