A large Secondary school are seeking a Mental Health Support Worker on a temporary basis, commencing September 2020.

The successful applicant will be instrumental in supporting pupils returning to education in the new academic year, following a significant time without accessing formal education. You will provide a high level of emotional support and will be responsible for managing challenging behaviour using a range of de-escalation techniques.

Key responsibilities:

  • To be the secure person for a designated group of students  by supervising and providing particular support, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Develop a holistic approach to meeting Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, enabling learners to make good progress by working with teachers, other support staff, families and external agencies
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with students and interact with them according to individual needs
  • Encourage students to interact with others and engage in activities led by teacher
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence
  • To help students develop resilience and independence, both learning in lessons and forming positive relationships with peers and staff
  • To develop and enhance expertise in supporting students with complex social, emotional and mental health needs by attending training and working alongside relevant internal and external professionals such as psychologists and therapists
  • Promote good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtime when required

This is a challenging and demanding role which requires a high level of patience and delivery of targeted support, however is also a very rewarding role. You will play a vital part in these children’s lives and making their return to education easier.  The working hours will be 8:30am - 4:15pm, Mon - Fri. 

We are seeking an individual with previous experience of providing mental health support within an education or health care setting. You may have worked with young people or adults with complex needs, and will have a sound understanding of holistic behaviour de-escalation and therapeutic crisis intervention. Training in Positive Handling such as Team Teach, MAPA, NAPPI (or similar) would be an advantage. We will also consider applications from individuals with experience, training or qualifications in:
