Role Overview:

As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing proactive support and intervention to students experiencing mental health difficulties. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Mental Health Support: Offering empathetic and non-judgmental support to students facing mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and stress, through one-to-one sessions, group activities, and workshops.

  2. Emotional Regulation: Assisting students in developing coping strategies and emotional regulation techniques to manage their feelings and responses in challenging situations, promoting resilience and self-awareness.

  3. Crisis Intervention: Providing immediate support and intervention to students in crisis situations, liaising with appropriate school staff, external agencies, and families to ensure the safety and well-being of the student.

  4. Collaboration and Referral: Collaborating with school staff, including pastoral leaders, counsellors, and SENCOs, to identify students in need of mental health support and making appropriate referrals to external agencies and services.

  5. Psychoeducation: Delivering psychoeducational sessions and workshops to students, parents, and staff on topics related to mental health awareness, coping strategies, and self-care practices.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with young people, preferably in a mental health support role or similar capacity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Empathy, patience, and resilience in supporting students facing mental health challenges, demonstrating a compassionate and non-judgmental approach.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues affecting young people, including common symptoms, risk factors, and support strategies.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the changing needs of students and the school environment, prioritising student well-being and safety.
