PMLD Teaching Assistant

  • Are you kind-spirited, and take reward in being able to help vulnerable individuals?
  • Do you have experience working with pupils that have Profound Multiple Learning Disabilities?
  • Hold a minimum of a Level 2 Education or Health & Social Care qualification?
  • Will you be able to assist wheelchair users when needed?

The position is within a special educational school based in Swansea and will be highly challenging but will offer you great job satisfaction and sense of achievement.

What will the role involve?

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with PMLD
  • Support students with their physical and personal care needs
  • Promote positive behaviour and ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment
  • Build positive relationships with students, parents and carers, and other members of staff
  • Assist with preparation and delivery of lessons including therapeutic activities, under the guidance of the class teacher

The ideal candidate will have two or more of the following:

  • Hold a valid driving licence with access to own vehicle (Essential)
  • Minimum of a Level 2 Education or Health & Social Care qualification (Essential)
  • A good understanding about profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) needs
  • Understanding of different teaching strategies and interventions for individuals with complex learning needs.
  • A willingness to learn and adapt to the needs of each individual student
  • Be warm, kind and caring
  • The ability to remain calm when faced with pressured situations
  • Ability to work as part of team

The following qualifications or knowledge of the following will be highly desirable, but not essential:

  • Picture Exchange Communication (PECS)
  • Makaton or BSL (to any level)
  • Autism Awareness/ASC Training
  • Team Teach / MAPA
  • Buccal midazolam training
  • Hydrotherapy and physio training
  • Rebound therapy
  • Peg & Tube Feeding

Due to the nature of this role and enhanced DBS check will take place prior to employment.
