Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH Science Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one Science tuition to a young person in Somerset. This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The successful tutor will have experience supporting young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs, and will be confident adapting their approach to suit individual learning styles, emotional needs and levels of engagement. The role will involve building a trusting relationship with the student and creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment where they feel comfortable to engage with Science.

The tutor will play an important role in supporting the student's academic progress, confidence, resilience and re-engagement with education, while recognising that their individual needs may require a flexible approach outside of a traditional classroom setting.

The role may involve:

  • Providing one-to-one Science tuition tailored to the student's individual SEND/SEMH needs.
  • Supporting the student across relevant areas of the Secondary Science curriculum.
  • Planning and delivering engaging, accessible and appropriately challenging Science lessons.
  • Adapting teaching methods, resources, pace and expectations to suit the student's needs.
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support to help the student make progress.
  • Developing scientific understanding, reasoning, problem-solving and independent learning skills.
  • Using creative and practical approaches to make Science engaging and accessible.
  • Supporting the student's confidence, self-esteem, resilience and motivation.
  • Helping the student overcome barriers to learning and gradually re-engage with education.
  • Providing a calm and consistent approach when supporting students who may experience anxiety, dysregulation or difficulties with engagement.
  • Encouraging positive attitudes towards learning and developing greater independence.
  • Supporting revision and preparation for assessments where appropriate.
  • Monitoring progress and providing regular feedback.
  • Building a positive, trusting and professional relationship with the student.
  • Working collaboratively with parents/carers, schools and other professionals involved in the student's education.
  • Maintaining appropriate safeguarding and professional boundaries at all times.

Essential requirements:

  • Experience teaching or tutoring Science at secondary level.
  • Experience working with SEND and/or SEMH children or young people.
  • A good understanding of the Secondary Science curriculum.
  • Experience delivering one-to-one or highly personalised support is desirable.
  • Ability to adapt teaching and communication styles to meet individual needs.
  • A patient, calm, empathetic and flexible approach.
  • Confidence supporting students who may have experienced challenges within a mainstream school environment.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and engage students who may be reluctant or anxious about learning.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting both the academic and emotional development of young people.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
  • The right to work in the UK.

Quantum Scholars is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment checks.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate's qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client's pay policy.
