SEND/SEMH Maths Tutor - Minehead

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH Maths Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Minehead.
A key requirement for this role is experience supporting young people with SEND/SEMH needs, including those who may display challenging behaviour, struggle with emotional regulation or find traditional learning environments difficult to access. The successful tutor will be confident establishing clear boundaries, managing challenging situations calmly and using positive strategies to encourage engagement with learning.
You will need strong Maths subject knowledge and the ability to adapt your teaching approach to suit the individual learner. The focus will be on building confidence, identifying gaps in knowledge and helping the young person make positive progress in Maths within a calm and supportive environment.
Experience supporting young people with school avoidance, anxiety, disengagement or other barriers to education would be highly desirable.
This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.
The role may involve:
- Providing personalised one-to-one Maths tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
- Supporting a young person with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Supporting learners who may display challenging or unpredictable behaviour.
- Establishing clear boundaries, routines and expectations.
- Using positive behaviour support strategies to encourage engagement.
- Remaining calm, patient and consistent during challenging situations.
- Using appropriate de-escalation strategies where required.
- Adapting Maths lessons, resources and activities to meet individual needs.
- Supporting areas including number, algebra, geometry, statistics, ratio, proportion and problem solving.
- Identifying gaps in knowledge and addressing areas of difficulty.
- Supporting GCSE Maths where appropriate.
- Helping the learner develop confidence and positive attitudes towards Maths.
- Supporting a young person who may experience anxiety, school avoidance or disengagement.
- Creating a calm, structured and positive learning environment.
- Using the learner's interests and strengths to encourage engagement.
- Developing independence, resilience and confidence.
- Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
- Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
- Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the young person's support.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
- Strong Maths subject knowledge at secondary level.
- Experience teaching or tutoring Maths.
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Significant experience supporting young people who display challenging behaviour.
- Confidence managing challenging, distressed or unpredictable behaviour appropriately.
- Understanding of positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
- Experience providing one-to-one support is desirable.
- Ability to adapt teaching to individual academic, emotional and behavioural needs.
- A calm, patient, flexible and empathetic approach.
- Ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with young people.
- Experience supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.
- Reliable and consistent approach to work.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
