Smile Education is recruiting on behalf of a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Hyde, seeking an experienced and confident SEN Teaching Assistant to join their KS1 Resource Base from September 2026.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated Teaching Assistant with strong SEN experience who is passionate about supporting children with additional needs. The Resource Base provides a specialist, supportive environment where children receive tailored support to help them communicate, develop their independence and access learning.
The successful candidate will join an experienced team and work closely with the class teacher and other teaching assistants to provide consistent, nurturing and effective support.

The Role
As a KS1 SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting children with a range of additional and complex needs.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support to children with additional needs.
  • Supporting children with sensory needs, communication barriers and physical needs.
  • Working confidently with children who may be non-verbal or have limited communication.
  • Supporting children to develop communication, independence and social skills.
  • Using appropriate strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
  • Managing challenging behaviour calmly and confidently, including behaviours such as hitting or biting where these may arise from communication difficulties.
  • Supporting children to access learning activities and the wider curriculum.
  • Working closely with the class teacher and wider Resource Base team to ensure consistent support.
  • Creating a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Encouraging children to participate in activities and develop their confidence and independence.
  • Following individual support plans and adapting your approach to meet children's needs.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with children and helping them feel secure and valued.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • A recognised Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or equivalent.
  • Strong experience supporting children with SEN/additional needs.
  • A minimum of 6 months' recent UK classroom experience.
  • Experience working with children who have communication, sensory, physical or behavioural needs.
  • Confidence supporting children who may display challenging behaviour.
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach.
  • The confidence and personality to get stuck in and take a proactive approach.
  • Strong behaviour management skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • A nurturing and child-centred approach.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with children and staff.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs to thrive.

Requirements
  • Enhanced DBS Certificate registered on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one through Smile Education.
  • A relevant Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or equivalent.
  • At least 6 months' recent UK classroom experience.
  • Strong experience supporting children with SEN and additional needs.
  • Ability to provide a full two years of employment and/or education references.
  • At least one reference relating to working with children.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • References should be available during the pre-screen or registration process to support a smooth compliance journey.
