Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Support Assistant to join a specialist secondary provision in the Wigan area that supports pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This specialist setting caters for students who may have experienced challenges within mainstream education and require additional support to re-engage with learning. With small class sizes, a highly supportive staff team, and a strong focus on emotional wellbeing, the school provides a structured and nurturing environment where students are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. Staff are committed to creating meaningful relationships with pupils, helping them achieve both academically and personally.

About the Role

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping students manage their emotions, develop positive coping strategies, and fully access their education. You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and other professionals to provide consistent support and guidance throughout the school day.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Delivering targeted 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH needs.
• Supporting pupils to remain engaged and focused during lessons.
• Building positive professional relationships that encourage trust and confidence.
• Using restorative approaches and de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations.
• Promoting emotional wellbeing, resilience, and self-regulation skills.
• Supporting students during breaktimes, transitions, and other less structured periods of the day.
• Collaborating with teachers, pastoral staff, families, and external agencies to support positive outcomes.
• Acting as a positive role model and promoting a safe, inclusive learning environment.

What We're Looking For

• Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly within education, youth work, residential care, sports coaching, mentoring, or support work.
• A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Confidence in managing challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner.
• A genuine desire to support young people with SEMH needs.
• The ability to adapt to the individual needs of pupils and respond positively to different situations.
• Relevant qualifications are welcomed but not essential.
