Supporting Young People with SEMH Needs

Teaching Personnel are seeking a compassionate, resilient and dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to join a specialist alternative provision in Wigan. This is a full-time role with an immediate start, ideal for someone who is truly passionate about supporting young people who require additional emotional and behavioural support.


About the Setting

This provision is a specialist alternative education setting that supports pupils who have struggled to thrive in mainstream education. The school provides a structured, nurturing, and supportive environment, focused on helping students re-engage with learning and build positive relationships.

Many pupils have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and may display challenging behaviours. Staff work closely as a team to offer consistent, therapeutic approaches, enabling students to achieve both academically and personally.


‍ The Role

As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a specific pupil, providing tailored support to help them access the curriculum and develop key life skills.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 support in and out of the classroom
  • Building a positive, trusting relationship with your allocated pupil
  • Supporting the pupil’s emotional regulation and behaviour management
  • Assisting with lesson delivery and adapting materials to meet individual needs
  • Implementing behaviour plans and working alongside teaching staff and SENCOs
  • Encouraging engagement, independence, and resilience
  • Supporting with pastoral care and wellbeing

✅ Requirements

We are looking for individuals who are empathetic, patient, and proactive, with a genuine desire to make a difference.

Essential requirements include:

  • Experience working with SEMH needs (education, youth work, care, or similar)
  • A nurturing and resilient personality
  • Strong behaviour management skills
  • A valid DBS certificate on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Ability to commit to a full-time role (Monday–Friday)
  • A passion for supporting young people who face barriers to learning
