Are you a confident KS1 Teaching Assistant with a passion for helping children become fluent, confident readers?

Teaching Personnel are working with a welcoming primary school in Southport who are looking for a dedicated KS1 Teaching Assistant to join their team from November 2026 until May 2027. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has strong phonics knowledge and enjoys delivering targeted support that makes a real difference to children's progress.

This role is ideal for a Teaching Assistant who is confident working across Key Stage 1 and has experience supporting early reading, phonics, and small-group interventions.

As the KS1 Teaching Assistant, you will play a key part in supporting pupils with their early reading and phonics development. You will work closely with the class teacher and wider KS1 team to deliver focused phonics interventions, helping children build confidence, close gaps and make strong progress.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading small-group and 1:1 phonics interventions
  • Supporting pupils across KS1 with reading, writing and early literacy
  • Helping children develop confidence with sounds, blending and segmenting
  • Tracking progress and feeding back to the class teacher
  • Supporting classroom learning where required
  • Creating a positive, encouraging and engaging learning environment
  • Helping pupils stay motivated, focused and proud of their progress

  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant within KS1
  • Strong knowledge of phonics and early reading
  • Experience delivering phonics interventions, ideally using programmes such as Read Write Inc., Letters and Sounds, Little Wandle or similar
  • A patient, nurturing and encouraging approach
  • Confidence working with small groups and individual pupils
  • Strong communication skills
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to be part of the wider school team
  • A genuine passion for supporting children's learning and development

A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification would be desirable, but relevant school-based experience will also be considered.

This is not just a general classroom support role. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of targeted phonics intervention work and directly support children at a crucial stage in their learning journey.

For the right candidate, this role offers:

  • A long-term placement from November 2026 to May 2027
  • The chance to specialise in phonics and early reading support
  • A supportive Southport primary school environment
  • Consistent weekly work through Teaching Personnel
  • The opportunity to make a measurable impact on pupil progress

As part of Teaching Personnel's Liverpool Primary team, we work closely with mainstream primary schools across Sefton, Liverpool, Merseyside, Wirral, Speke and St Helens, supporting schools with high-quality teaching and support staff.

  • Access to CPD and professional development opportunities
