Quantum Scholars are looking for a supportive, patient and experienced English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person accessing EOTAS (Education Other Than At School) / Alternative Provision in Wokingham.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

You will be responsible for delivering engaging and accessible English sessions, adapting your teaching to the student's individual needs, abilities, interests and learning style. Alongside academic progress, the role will focus on developing the student's confidence, engagement, independence and positive attitude towards education.



The role may involve:

  • Providing one-to-one English tuition within an EOTAS/Alternative Provision setting.
  • Supporting the student across relevant areas of the English curriculum.
  • Developing skills in reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and communication.
  • Supporting GCSE English preparation where appropriate.
  • Planning engaging, accessible and appropriately challenging lessons.
  • Adapting teaching methods, resources and pace to suit the student's individual needs.
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support.
  • Encouraging confidence and a positive attitude towards English and learning.
  • Supporting a student who may have experienced school avoidance, anxiety, SEMH needs or other barriers to education.
  • Helping the student gradually re-engage with learning and develop greater independence.
  • Using the student's interests to make lessons relevant and engaging.
  • Supporting organisation, study skills and preparation for assessments where appropriate.
  • Building a positive, consistent and trusting relationship with the student.
  • Monitoring progress and providing constructive feedback.
  • Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the student's education.
  • Maintaining appropriate safeguarding and professional boundaries at all times.


Essential requirements:

  • Experience teaching or tutoring English at secondary level.
  • Strong knowledge of the English curriculum.
  • Experience working with SEND, SEMH, EOTAS or Alternative Provision students is highly desirable.
  • Experience providing one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.
  • Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
  • A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
  • Confidence supporting young people who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage students who have experienced barriers within a mainstream school environment.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting both academic progress and the wider development of the young person.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
  • The right to work in the UK.
