Behaviour Support Mentor - Wokingham

Quantum Scholars are looking for a calm, patient and experienced Behaviour Support Mentor to work closely with a young person in Wokingham who requires consistent support with challenging behaviour across both school and home environments.
The successful candidate will build a positive and trusting relationship with the young person, providing consistent boundaries, encouragement and practical strategies to help them manage their behaviour and emotions. The role will involve working closely with the young person in school, as well as providing support within the home environment where appropriate.
This is a relationship-led role and would suit someone who is confident supporting young people who may struggle with emotional regulation, frustration, communication, boundaries or engagement with education. The ability to remain calm and consistent during challenging situations is essential.
The role may involve:
- Providing one-to-one behaviour and emotional support to the young person.
- Supporting the young person within the school environment and at home.
- Building a strong, positive and trusting relationship based on consistency and clear boundaries.
- Supporting emotional regulation and helping the young person recognise and manage their emotions.
- Identifying triggers and potential barriers that may contribute to challenging behaviour.
- Using appropriate strategies to de-escalate situations and reduce challenging behaviour.
- Supporting the young person to develop positive coping strategies.
- Encouraging positive behaviour, engagement and participation in education.
- Providing reassurance and helping the young person manage frustration, anxiety or difficult situations.
- Establishing clear and consistent routines and expectations.
- Encouraging responsibility, independence and positive decision-making.
- Supporting the young person to develop their confidence and social skills.
- Reinforcing positive behaviours and celebrating progress.
- Helping the young person develop strategies that can be used both at school and at home.
- Communicating effectively with parents/carers, school staff and other professionals involved in the young person's support.
- Monitoring behaviour and providing appropriate feedback on progress and any concerns.
- Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.
Essential requirements:
- Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour.
- Experience working with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Experience providing one-to-one support in a school, alternative provision, mentoring, youth work or similar setting.
- A calm, patient and consistent approach when managing challenging situations.
- Confidence using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
- Understanding of the importance of clear boundaries, routines and consistent expectations.
- Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
- Good understanding of emotional regulation and the factors that can contribute to challenging behaviour.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain professional and composed when faced with difficult or unpredictable behaviour.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to supporting the individual needs of the young person.
- Ability to work collaboratively with parents/carers, school staff and other professionals.
- Reliable and consistent approach.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
