Job Description

Are you team teach trained? Are you passionate about working with hard-to-reach young people? Are you looking for a full time job in a Pupil Referral Unit Primary School in Wakefield? If yes, then read on for more information!

A primary school in Wakefield that caters for students Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs are actively looking for a SEN Teaching Assistant to start with them as soon as possible. The school seeks to support their educational goals, whilst also helping them cope with their emotional and behavioural needs. The schools work as closely as possible to the national curriculum and so experience with either primary curriculum is ideal for this role. The role of the successful behaviour support worker will be to assist the class teacher with the lessons, keeping the students engaged and motivated. Due to the student's sensitive background and needs, the successful applicant will have experience working with vulnerable children or adults and be confident de-escalating children in emotional and behavioural crisis using team teach training. This is a long term role on supply with the school, with opportunity to be taken on permanently.

Your role will include:
Establishing constructive relationships with students
Following the positive handling plans for each individual child
Support class teacher and other BSWs to maintain a positive working environment
Develop a clear understanding of the specific needs of each pupil
Looking after children's physical, emotional and social welfare
Recognising signs of distress in children, offering reassurance and de-escalating the situation to best of your ability
To maintain a record and provide regular feedback about pupils to the teachers and/or SENCO in order to best track pupil progress
Assist the school in communicating with parent and carers using appropriate approach
To support all learners in their curriculum studies and throughout the day

Key skills and experience needed:
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
Commitment to and passion for working with vulnerable children
Experience working in SEND setting
Primary national curriculum experience is essential
Experience working or volunteering with children
The ability to manage confrontation and challenging behaviour
Able to work with learners with various learning difficulties
Flexibility in approach to educating and supporting children
Team teach certification essential
Experience as a SEN teaching assistant or BSW ideal
