Social Emotional Mental Health Teaching Assistant


Job Description

A well established SEMH school in Wakefield is seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to start as soon as possible. It is a primary school, accommodating pupils aged 11-19 with Social, Emotional, Mental Health, and Behavioural Difficulties, as well as Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, who struggle to access mainstream education. This is a long term position to cover a staff member on leave until the end of the academic year: the role will involve supporting the class of children alongside the other teaching assistants and class teacher.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work in a progressive school with an ethos of working with the students in a positive and encouraging way to help them reach their potential. The successful applicant will have a patient and caring disposition and an ability to quickly build meaningful relationships with students and their staff team. It is necessary for the successful applicant to have the experience, patience and understanding to deal with students displaying aggression and difficult behaviour.

The role will include:
Supporting the students both in lessons and during break times
Managing behaviour in line with the school's behavioural policy and positive handling plans
Working proactively with other staff members with the school
Ensuring the safeguarding of students at all times
Assisting in delivering the KS3 and 4 curriculum

Experience of working with young people with SEMH/SEBD/SEND needs
Confidence in managing challenging behaviour
An ability to engage with, and build rapport with young people
A creative, proactive and flexible supporting style
An ability to provide a nurturing and caring connection with the vulnerable student
Team teach certification is essential for this role
