I am looking for committed, resilient and empathic candidates to work with some of the most vulnerable pupils in Barking and Dagenham. School visits are taking place NOW.

This school is unique. The cohort of pupils attending have extremely complex needs. The Therapeutic Teaching Assistant will ideally have education and training in psychology and therapy based intervention. Experience in the arts, with music, art or drama is highly desirable.

The school in Barking and Dagenham provides education for pupils aged 5 to 19 years, all with EHC Plans for complex SEMH, mental health and behavioural needs. Many pupils are struggling with the challenges of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, opposition defiance disorder and conduct disorder. Others have suffered traumatic experiences, which have affected their learning and behaviour.

I have highlighted this position as a Therapeutic Teaching Assistant role because of the core therapy focus at the school. The curriculum is split into four distinct areas, with only one section being dedicated to the School Based Curriculum. The other areas of focus are Personal Development and Achievement, Vocational Programme and Transitions, and Therapeutic Interventions.

Pupils at this school have often already attended several other specialist provisions before. Many have experienced highly disrupted education and training and inconsistent support. The behavioural challenges of these students can be immense and the school are looking for candidates who understand that behaviour is a means of communication for these children. There is an extensive therapy team on site who work closely with the teaching and support teams.

The Therapeutic Teaching Assistant will approach pupils with a genuine curiosity and empathy to understand their difficulties and work alongside them to find solutions, helping them to build their own skills in emotional regulation, interpersonal communication, confidence and independence.

The Therapeutic Teaching Assistant must have:

  • Experience supporting young people with SEMH
  • Experience working in a school setting with complex behaviour highly desired
  • Genuine passion for supporting vulnerable youth, patience and professionalism
  • Strong belief in the potential of every child and the right of every child to receive support
  • Creative background in art, drama or music highly desired
  • Education and training in therapy, psychology, attachment, mental health and trauma highly desired
  • Be based on the school site in Barking and Dagenham and willing to travel to the vocational site in Romford.

The School:

  • OFSTED rated GOOD
  • Pupils aged 5-19 years old
  • Around 46 Pupils on site
  • Strong Therapy Team and focus
  • 2nd Vocational Site which is separate to the school
  • A highly specialised SEMH setting
  • Based in Barking and Dagenham
