Job Vacancy: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Sutton

Contract: Full-time, Term-Time Only

Are you passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education? Do you want to play a pivotal role in supporting students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

We are looking for a committed SEMH Teaching Assistant for a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Sutton. This is a unique opportunity to work in a specialist setting where you can make a meaningful impact on the lives of students who need additional support.

This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday and the hours are from 8.30am-3.30pm.

Our PRU School offers a safe, inclusive, and nurturing space for students who have faced challenges in mainstream education. The School focus on building resilience, re-engaging students with learning, and helping them develop the skills they need to succeed.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

• Develop trusting relationships with students to support their emotional and academic growth.
• Assist teachers in delivering tailored lessons to meet individual learning needs.
• Provide one-to-one and small group support to help students overcome barriers to learning.
• Create a positive, inclusive, and structured classroom environment.
• Implement behaviour management strategies with empathy and consistency.
• Support students in building social, emotional, and life skills.
• Work closely with staff, parents, and external professionals to deliver holistic support.

We are seeking someone who:

• Is patient, empathetic, and resilient, with a genuine passion for working with vulnerable young people.
• Has experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs (preferred but not essential).
• Can manage challenging behaviours calmly and professionally.
• Is a confident communicator and team player.
• Is flexible, proactive, and able to adapt to changing situations.
