Behaviour Support Assistant – SEMH Primary School (Salford)

Teaching Personnel are seeking a committed and resilient Behaviour Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) primary school in the Salford area. Pupils in this setting present a range of SEMH needs, including challenging behaviour, trauma-related difficulties, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, attachment needs, and barriers to communication. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting vulnerable children and helping them re-engage positively with learning.

The Role

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will:

• Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
• Implement effective behaviour regulation strategies and de-escalation techniques.
• Build trusting, positive relationships with pupils to support emotional wellbeing.
• Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to deliver personalised support plans.
• Promote pupil independence, confidence, and engagement within the classroom.
• Assist in maintaining a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment.
• Support with daily routines, transitions, and behaviour monitoring.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you should have:

• Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour, SEN, or SEMH needs (school, youth work, residential care, or similar).
• A calm, patient, and consistent approach to behaviour management.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• An understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
• A child workforce Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one through Teaching Personnel.
• Relevant training such as Team Teach, MAPA, or de-escalation (advantageous but not essential).
