A special school in Bradford are seeking a Learning Support Assistant to provide additional support for pupils with Autism and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs this September.

The school, situated in Shipley, provides a personalised programme of education and support for 215 pupils aged 11-19 with a range of additional learning needs.

A key part of your role will be to support with the transition of pupils who will be returning to school in the new academic year, following a substantial amount of time without accessing education in the Summer term. You will assist teachers to re-introduce structure and routine, and to manage anxiety and support individuals who may exhibit challenging behaviours.

The successful candidate will work under the instruction guidance of teaching/senior staff to undertake work/care/support programmes, to enable access to learning for pupils and to assist the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or may regularly take place outside the main teaching area.

Key duties:

  • Creating and maintaining a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans
  • Assisting with the display of pupils work
  • Using strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals
  • Monitoring pupils responses to learning activities and accurately recording achievement/progress as directed
  • Providing detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress, problems etc.
  • Promoting good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Establishing constructive relationships with parents/carers and where appropriate participating in feedback sessions with parents alongside the teacher
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care Programmes
  • Setting challenging and demanding expectations and promoting self-esteem and independence
  • Supporting students to meet the criteria & assessment needs of all KS4 accredited programmes, including Functional Skills English and Maths

We are ideally seeking a Learning Support Assistant with good communication skills, who is able to use their initiative to support pupils with Special Educational needs to engage with learning activities. You will have the ability to work as part of a large, multi disciplinary tea, and will be able to form strong working relationships with colleagues, pupils and parents/carers.

Previous experience of working with children or adults with Special Educational Needs in an education or care capacity is essential. Additional experience using Makaton, PECS, or using Rebus Symbols  would be an advantage.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
