Caretaker

We are seeking a reliable, proactive, and hardworking Caretaker to join our friendly primary school team. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining a safe, secure, clean, and welcoming environment for our pupils, staff, visitors, and wider school community.

Location: Nelson
Salary: £14.25 per hour
Contract Type: Full-time and long-term
Hours: Split shift e.g. 6am – 8am and 3pm – 6pm

Start Date: ASAP or 1^st September 2026

Key Responsibilities

• Opening and securing the school premises, including routine locking and unlocking duties.
• Carrying out regular health and safety checks across the site.
• Undertaking general maintenance, repairs, and DIY tasks.
• Ensuring the school grounds, playgrounds, and pathways are safe, tidy, and well-maintained.
• Monitoring and reporting maintenance issues requiring specialist attention.
• Managing heating, lighting, and other building systems efficiently.
• Assisting with room setup for school events, meetings, and activities.
• Coordinating with contractors and service providers when required.
• Supporting emergency procedures and responding to site-related issues.
• Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and school policies.

About You

The successful candidate will:

• Have previous experience in a caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or site management role (desirable).
• Possess practical DIY and basic maintenance skills.
• Be able to work independently and use their initiative.
• Have a good understanding of health and safety practices.
• Demonstrate excellent organisational and problem-solving skills.
• Be dependable, trustworthy, and flexible.
• Take pride in maintaining high standards across the school site.
• Enjoy working as part of a team and contributing to the wider school community.
